The West Point Consolidated School District is participating in an ongoing statewide effort to identify, locate, and evaluate children birth through the age of twenty-one (21) residing the District. This includes children with disabilities who are homeless or wards of the State, parentally placed and attending private schools, regardless of the severity of their disability, and who are in need of special education and related services. A child with a Disability is a child evaluated … having mental retardation, a hearing impairment (including deafness), a speech or language impairment, a visual impairment (including blindness), a serious emotional …, and orthopedic impairment, autism, traumatic brain injury, and other health impairment, a specific learning disability, deaf-blindness, or multiple disabilities, and who, by reason thereof, needs special education services. A practical method is utilized to develop and implement a process to determine which children are currently receiving needed special education and related services. Early identification of children in need of special education is essential to adequately prepare them for life long experiences. In addition, this information gathered from contacts with parents and other agencies will be used to help determine present and future program needs as improvement is made toward the goals of providing a free and appropriate public education to all children with a disability.
The Office of Special Services works with the local Head Start, Department of Human Services, Health and Mental Health Agencies, as well as local education agencies, physicians, and other individuals to identify and locate children out-of-school and in-school who may be in need of special services.
